Jako pierwsza trójwymiarowy interfejs wprowadziła firma Imagis w listopadzie 2007 r. Wraz z premierą aplikacji MapaMap w wersji 5.0 udostępniła możliwość wyświetlania trójwymiarowych brył budynków dla Poznania, Łodzi i Warszawy. Niedługo później widok budynków 3D pojawił się w konkurencyjnym produkcie - AutoMapa 4.5 - i to od razu dostępnym dla 34 miast. Trójwymiarowość z pewnością może ułatwiać poruszanie się, zwłaszcza w centrach dużych miast, ale jej zastosowanie nie jest kluczowym czynnikiem w nawigacji. Funkcje obsługi brył 3D stanowią znaczne obciążenie obliczeniowe i praca w tym trybie na słabszych/starszych urządzeniach może okazać się mało komfortowa, a czasem wręcz niemożliwa.
Ewolucja systemu GPS spowodowała, że jego zastosowania wykraczają znacznie poza oryginalne przeznaczenie i obecnie stał się on niezbędny dla wielu ludzi w życiu codziennym. Używany jest od transportu i usług do oceanicznego żeglarstwa regatowego. Korzysta się z niego zarówno planując relaksującą wakacyjną przejażdżkę, jak i najoszczędniejszą trasę od punktu A do B.
W miarę wzbogacania informacji przekazywanych przez satelity pozycjonujące odkrywane są coraz nowsze zastosowania dla systemu GPS. To już nie tylko transport (pozycjonowanie pojazdów, określanie trasy, kontrola prędkości), ale także mniej oczywiste zastosowania, jaki jak poszukiwania na morzu i w górach oraz ratownictwo.
Równie ważna jest łatwość dostępu do tych informacji. Oczywiste jest korzystanie z GPS przez członków kosztownych ekspedycji wojskowych czy naukowych. Dziś jednak każdy może wejść do sklepu, kupić urządzenie SatNav i korzystać z najbardziej zaawansowanego systemu nawigacyjnego w historii ludzkości.
Niewątpliwie niektóre z najnowszych cywilnych zastosowań systemów SatNav, takie jak odnajdowanie przydrożnych restauracji, mogą wydawać się niepoważne dla pionierów nawigacji satelitarnej. Nikt nie może jednak zaprzeczyć, że najnowsze prywatne zastosowania systemu GPS powoduje, że życie wszystkich ludzi staje się bezpieczniejsze, bardziej twórcze i mniej stresujące.

Taka wersje auta trzeba jednak specjalnie zamawiać, a koszty instalacji pełnego systemu nie są niskie: od 5000 do 22000 PLN (w zależności od marki samochodu, marki sprzętu i możliwości systemu). Cena wzrasta w przypadku dodatkowych funkcji urządzenia i wykorzystywania informacji z innych (niz. satelitarne) źródeł: zewnętrznych sond, żyroskopów, systemów telemetrycznych czy informacji nadawanych w kanale radiowym (RDS TMC). Systemy montowane niezależnie oraz te zintegrowane z konkretnymi modelami samochodów dostarczane są przez wielu producentów. Najbardziej popularne to Alpine, Becker, Blaupunkt, Kenwood, Magneti Marelli, Clarion, Pioneer oraz VDO Dayton (Philips) - każdy z nich oferuje inne możliwości i cenę montażu oraz użytkowania.
