Niektóre modele  GPS posiadają również dokładne mapy alpejskich regionów turystycznych. Wystarczy wpisać adres, a ten niewielkich rozmiarów satelitarny przewodnik zaprowadzi kierowcę prosto do celu. Po wprowadzeniu interesującego nas adresu urządzenie wytycza trasę, a następnie prowadzi w odpowiednie miejsce przy pomocy wskazówek graficznych na ekranie oraz komunikatów głosowych informujących o każdym manewrze. System GPS oferuje nam również bogaty zestaw informacji o tysiącach miejsc użyteczności publicznej wraz z telefonami kontaktowymi np. restauracje, stacje benzynowe, parkingi, hotele, apteki, szpitale oraz wiele innych. Niespotykany dotąd komfort nawigacji zapewnia aktywowany dotykiem, wysokiej jakości, panoramiczny wyświetlacz, dzięki czemu całość obsługi odbywa się po prostu przez bezpośredni dotyk.


Producenci odbiorników prześcigają się w oferowaniu coraz to wymyślniejszych funkcji i czynienia odbiorników mniejszymi, tańszymi i prostszymi w obsłudze. Standardem jest możliwość nazywania zapamiętanych punktów i grupowania ich w trasy. Po trasie takiej użytkownik zostanie automatycznie przez odbiornik poprowadzony. W czasie poruszania się do wyznaczonego punktu stale będzie otrzymywał informacje o kursie, prędkości, prędkości zbliżania się do celu i szacowania czasu przybycia.
Graficzny wyświetlacz pokaże obraz kompasu z zaznaczonym kursem, lub tzw. „higway view” czyli przedstawienie drogi prostej (odbiornik porusza się dokładnie w stronę celu) lub skręconej (należy skorygować kurs). Lepsze modele same rejestrują przebytą drogę, znacząc ją bezpośrednio na graficznym wyświetlaczu.
