Odbiorniki stosowane w nawigacji, umożliwiające jednoczesna obserwacje nawet kilkunastu satelitów, dokonują podczas pracy kilku czynności: dekodują informacje nałożone na fale nośna, korelują odbierane sygnały, wykonują obliczenia dotyczące identyfikacji satelitów i ich optymalnego wyboru oraz ostatecznie określają położenie odbiornika, co może odbywać się na dwa sposoby: mniej dokładny (10 -100 m), wystarczający dla pomiarów nawigacyjnych, oraz bardzo precyzyjny (1-20 mm), stosowany w pracach inżynieryjnych.
Pierwszy sztuczny satelita został umieszczony na orbicie okołoziemskiej
4 października 1957 roku według pracy rosyjskiego uczonego Konstantina Ciołkowskiego, w której zawarł teorię lotu rakiety wielostopniowej składającej się z kilku członów połączonych ze sobą, z których każdy ma silnik rakietowy i zapas paliwa. Po wyczerpaniu paliwa człony kolejno odłączają sie, a rakietę napędza silnik umieszczony w następnym członie. Satelita ten nosił nazwę Sputnik 1.
Do tego czasu wysłano już z ziemi kilka tysięcy satelitów, o najróżniejszych kształtach, o masie od kilkudziesięciu kilogramów do kilkudziesięciu ton.
Krążą one po orbitach okołoziemskich na wysokościach od kilkuset do kilkudziesięciu, a nawet powyżej stu tysięcy kilometrów, niektóre poruszają się w przestrzeni międzyplanetarnej i przesyłają informacje z odległości nawet kilkuset milionów kilometrów.
Satelity wyposażone są z reguły w najnowocześniejszą aparaturę badawczą, przeznaczoną do wykonywanie określonych zadań.
