GLONASS
GLONASS (Global Orbiting Navigation Satellite System) to rosyjski system nawigacji ostatecznie uruchomiony w grudniu 1995 r.  Podobnie jak GPS, GLONASS korzysta z 24 satelitów i mimo że jest trochę dokładniejszy od GPS, jego poważną wadą było to, że satelity działały tylko 3 lata.

Podczas kryzysu ekonomicznego w Rosji pod koniec lat 90-tych, satelity nie zawsze były wymieniane, aż w końcu system utracił swoją efektywność. W roku 2000 działało tylko 8 z 24 satelitów. Jednak w ostatnich latach Rosjanie pracują intensywnie nad odbudowaniem systemu GLONASS i mają nadzieję przywrócić jego pełną funkcjonalność w 2012 roku.

Odbiorniki GPS stają się bez wątpienia coraz mniejsze, podobnie jak różne rodzaje sprzętu elektronicznego. Ten trend miniaturyzacji przyspieszany jest przez konsumenckie zapotrzebowanie coraz mniejszych, lżejszych, szybszych i tańszych urządzeń. Jednak pierwsze odbiorniki GPS trudno byłoby zabrać na górską wycieczkę.
